First Dance Friday: You Are my Sunshine

Ahh. Another work week has come and gone. You made it! We’re proud of you, it was a rough one wasn’t it. Well you’re in luck because now you get to unwind, and get back to wedding planning (because we know you weren’t sneaking it in while you were at work).  If you are still searching for the perfect first dance song then you are in the right place. If you’ve already found yours, you don’t have to leave, the more the marry-er, get it? Get it Cut us a break ok, it was a long week for us too! If you do already have your song though, maybe this song is perfect for your friend, or your co-worker, so feel free to share the love.

If you are just joining us for the first time, First Dance Fridays is where we select a first dance song for you that we love, let you listen to it, and tell you why we love it. Pretty simple right? If you have some catching up to do, don’t sweat it, you can go read from the beginning. If you join us weekly for a drink and a love song, then lets just get down to it!

Our love song selection this week is a classic song but with a twist, You are my Sunshine by Morgane and Chris Stapleton. If the name of the song makes you want to close your browser and go back to work, hopefully the name Chris Stapleton will make you want to reconsider. Chris Stapleton most recently was awarded the Country Music Awards male vocalist of the year for the second year in a row.  Morgane and Chris are husband and wife, so you know there is going to be some real emotion coming through, just what we want for a first dance song. And the icing on our imaginary (and therefore calorie free) sundae, he has “you are my sunshine” etched into his wedding ring. I mean come on!

Must not spend hours on Pinterst looking at engraved rings, must watch music video.

You are my sunshine, my only sunshine. You make me happy when skies are grey (0:27)

This song is surely one you’ve heard before, so these lyrics are nothing new to you. You probably remember this song from when you were a child so it might bring back memories for you and your hubby of singing this song with your parents, making this song even more special. You probably have never heard this song sung with this emotion. You are the light in each other lives, and no one can cheer you up more than that person slow dancing with you right now. Morgane Stapleton enhances all those emotions with her powerhouse voice which makes everything even more special.

You’ll never know dear how much I love you. So please don’t take my sunshine away (0:53)

As you probably know if you’ve sat down and tried to write your vows, its difficult to explain how much you love someone. We try our whole lives to explain it, but nothing you say can compare to the actual emotion you feel.

I’ll always love you, and make you happy, if you will only say the same (3:56)

You are promising yourself to this person, to love them no matter what. You will always love them, and you will do it more and more everyday. You make each other happy, and you make each other better people. You aren’t doing this for likes on Instagram or for more Snapchat followers, you are doing this because you are filled with unconditional love. You aren’t asking anything in return except that they feel the same about you.

Although this song may not seem like a traditional song for your first dance, it is powerful and full of totally raw emotion; a perfect recipe for your love song.  This song is sure to be the perfect way to start your new lives together as husband and wife.

We hope you had enough faith in us to listen to the song and follow along, if you stuck around, we told you it would be worth it! If you love our suggestion, or have one of your own, let us know in the comments, we’d love to hear from you!
